"Oral prophylaxis is a method of teeth cleaning aimed to remove plaque and tartar that accumulates around the teeth. This method includes tooth scaling, tooth polishing, and debridement. During oral prophylaxis, the dentist uses an ultrasonic scaler which is a type of machine used to remove the plaque and tartar. These ultrasonic scalers work by producing vibrations to gently remove hardened debris and are used with a mist of water to wash away the debris from the cleaned area. In addition to using scalers and water, flossing is also done to further remove the debris on the patient’s teeth. After the scaling process, the dentist moves on to tooth polishing using a prophylaxis paste and brush to further clean, smoothen, and make the teeth shiny."
